Three weeks ago the Nayatt School community welcomed Joseph A. Militello, the second interim principal at the elementary school this academic year. Mr. Militello replaced John Gray who acted as interim principal for the first semester.

A spokesman for the Rhode Island Department of Health said the whooping cough outbreak in Barrington appears to be on the decline. Peter Hanney, interim public information officer for the health department, said Thursday that Barrington has not had a new case of whooping cough — also known as pertussis — reported since Tuesday, Jan. 24. He added that there are currently 28 confirmed cases in town, 25 of which involve children in the local public schools.

Whooping cough tally reaches 21 in Barrington
Most of the confirmed cases involve school-age children
The number of people recently diagnosed with whooping cough in Barrington rose to 21 this week. On Wednesday, Jan. 18, a health department official said there were 18 confirmed cases of whooping cough — also known as pertussis — in the local public schools, and three cases that did not involve public school students. That’s a jump from the 16 confirmed cases that were reported on Monday, Jan. 16.

Late last week an official from the Rhode Island Department of Health said there were 16 children in Barrington who had been diagnosed with whooping cough. That's double the number of confirmed cases from about a week earlier.
