A to-do list for the new BCWA executive director

To the editor: We have a new executive director for the Bristol County Water Authority. Pam Marchand, previously with the Providence Water Supply Board where she acted as chief engineer and general manager, will be taking the reins at the end of the month.

Kids need more sleep, not later start time

To the editor: Regarding the recent letters to the editor concerning delaying school start times, I want to ask these experts if they attended the meeting on delaying school start times because their letters reflect by their facts that they did not.

We need evidence, not name-calling

To the editor: Here we go! Rather than looking at the evidence and making an intelligent decision, we’ll just resort to name calling and finger pointing.

Science on sleep needs of teens is clear

To the editor: I am writing in response the letter entitled “Shifting school start times sends wrong message” by Bob Shea. Sharing the same name with Mr. Shea has resulted in several instances of mistaken identity over the years, but the issue at hand certainly raises questions about the motivation of the Barrington Times to print the letter without some clarification.

Science supports changing start times

To the editor: I very much appreciate all of the conversation that has been generated by the school start forum on Jan. 26. The forum was meant to start a community level conversation while also educating the community about the importance of sleep and the physiology of sleep, and in that respect, it succeeded.

President Obama can help protect our bay

To the editor: Growing up on Narragansett Bay, I know that the Bay is the heart and soul of life in Rhode Island. As a kid, I explored its marshes with my sisters and all but lived on the beach during the summer months. Unfortunately, too many of the streams, rivers and wetlands that feed into waterways like the Bay are at risk of unlimited pollution due to loopholes in the Clean Water Act.

DeLise had to be watched by directors

To the editor: Yet another Bristol County Water Authority (BCWA) outrage was revealed at the Jan. 26 Bristol Town Council meeting during a discussion on revisions to the BCWA legislation and bylaws.

Congrats to the member of the month

To the editor: The BAY Team, Barrington’s prevention coalition against drug and alcohol abuse, promotes a safe and healthy community through collaboration and communication. This month, The BAY Team is pleased to award Stephen Phelan with the distinction of Member of the Month.

Shifting start time sends wrong message

To the editor: With runaway cost growth in labor and benefit costs, significant unfunded pension liabilities, decaying town infrastructure and spotty performance by some (students, faculty, administrators and school committee members) in our school system, I think the proponents of this change have found the silver bullet for what is holding our children’s performance back; let them sleep in!

Younger students forgotten in start times discussion

To the editor: Reflecting on the Barrington School Committee’s forum on changing school times last Thursday, I wanted to share some thoughts. The invited speakers were well informed and balanced in their comments and responses to questions from the Barrington residents present. It was made clear that school start times are changed expressly to benefit high school age youngsters. The needs of the many other school children in Barrington who are not of high school age do not seem to be under consideration at all. In fact, our younger learners were never mentioned, unless an audience member brought them into the exchange.
