Unified Volleyball: Eagles' spikers win division title

— The Barrington High School Unified volleyball team recently captured the Division II championship with a victory in the title match Oct. 27 in Portsmouth.

The Eagles were led by team captains Ty Lyons and Mary Kate Rizzuto, finishing with impressive victories to end season.

This year’s team roster included Eli Porter, Rachel Rasnick and Sidney Skurkovich, one the team’s most reliable servers. In addition, the Eagles’ Joshua Linakis and Molly Coffey provided heroic efforts each game played. Chris Calitri, Meg Lico, Jenna Ricci, Ben Wojcik, Hailey Graustein, Marshall Heitke, and Hannah Graustein all served as partners to the athletes this season.

Unified Sports provides students with special needs the opportunity to play along side their general education peers in a competitive high school sport.

The Rhode Island Interscholastic League partners with Special Olympics to provide this opportunity within our school district. Participating in Unified Sports provides the perfect opportunity for students to increase their knowledge and reduce fears about disabilities. The friendship and camaraderie between the athletes and partners has created an atmosphere of respect and understanding for students with special needs.
