The Barrington Pop Warner Junior Midget cheerleading team placed second at the New England Regional Competitions in Worcester, Mass. this Saturday and will advance to the national competition at Disney World in Orlando, Fla. in early December.

Pop Warner organizers said the invitation to nationals is a tremendous achievement — it is the first time a Barrington team (cheerleading or football) has reached the nationals since the local league was founded in 1971.

The Junior Midget team won first place in its division at the state competition on Oct. 22 and advanced past the first round of regional competition that took place in Springfield on Nov. 6. The Barrington Pee Wee team also advanced beyond Springfield.

The final regional competition was held on Nov. 19 at the DCU Center in Worcester and was an all-day event — the Pee Wee team competed at about 9 a.m., and the Junior Midgets performed at approximately 2 p.m. After their performance, the Junior Midgets had to wait for more than six hours until their second place finish was finally announced.

The Junior Midget team consists of Megan Boyle, Talia DeLuca, Nicole DeMopoulos, Madeline Durkin, Alexandria Heiser, Emma Katzen, Olivia Kelley, Lila Medeiros, Taylor Norris, Lauren Richardson, Emily Walczak and Lindsay Wright, and coaches Pat Martel and Monica Koehler.

Help support the Eagles

The team will travel to Disney on Dec. 5 and return on Dec. 8.

The girls and other Pop Warner volunteers were out on Sunday asking for donations and raised more than $1,800 that will be used towards trip expenses.

There is no funding available for the trip through the organization and each girl is obligated to pay her own way. Anyone wishing to support the team can send a check to Barrington Pop Warner, Inc., PO Box 192, Barrington.
