Riverside man says he was just reading vanity license plates

Barrington police ask man to leave Barrington Middle School property

— Barrington police responded to the Barrington Middle School parking lot on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at about 10 a.m. after someone noticed a man checking out cars parked in the lot and thought he might be looking to grab something from an unlocked vehicle.

Officers approached the man who was on a bicycle and asked him what he was doing.

The 47-year-old Riverside resident told officers that he was reading the vanity license plates on some of the cars: “Each one tells a story,” he reportedly said to the officer.

Police checked the man’s ID and then asked him to stay off school property.
