The history of Valentine’s Day

— Did you know that at least 141 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged annually?

Valentine’s Day started after the Emperor of Rome decided that men were better soldiers when single. He banned marriage for young men. That is when Saint Valentine started secretly marrying young couples. Soon St. Valentine was jailed.

Later, he met the jailer’s daughter and fell in love with her. She visited him every day. Before his death it is said that he sent a letter to her signed “Your Valentine” an expression that is still used today.

Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14th to commemorate St. Valentine’s death.
