PROVIDENCE — LaSalle Academy continued its run of dominance in the Large Class Girls’ Indoor Track and Field Championship Meet, winning the competition for the sixth winter in a row after the Rams bettered the rest Wednesday night, Feb. 8, at the Providence Career & Tech Academy Fieldhouse.
LaSalle posted 138 points well ahead of second-place Classical with 95. Barrington, participating in the Large Class for the first time, finished third with 38 points, one ahead of Woonsocket. East Providence finished ninth in the 11-team competition with eight points.
“It was another good day,” BHS head coach Steve Turgeon said. “It’s hard to score a lot of points with LaSalle and Classical in the meet. We ended up third, which is pretty good considering this is our first year in (Large Class) and we’re the smallest school in the meet.”
Barrington’s all came almost exclusively from either third or fourth-place finishes in events. The Eagles’ 4x200-meter relay team of Gabby Palko, Danielle Butts, Teondra Silva and Shennelle Teixiera opened the meet with a third-place run of 1 minute, 49.5 seconds.
Megan Verner-Crist next opened the individual events with a personal-best time of 10:57.2 to place third in the 3,000. Teixiera later was third in the 55-meter hurdles with a 9.0. Madison Smith was fifth in the event with a time of 9.4.
Alice Burgess (11:08.9) ran fourth right behind Verner-Crist in the 3,000. Mary Kate Coogan chipped in a solo fourth in the 1,500 with her time of 4:47.9, which was the fourth fastest clocking to date this winter in the state as well.
Also finishing fourth was the 4x8 relay team of Sophie Burgess, Kelsey Maxwell, Bella Gagliano and Kelly Dolan with a time of 10:31.7 as well as the 4x4 team Julianna Portelli, Fiona Paine, Teixiera and Silva, who closed the meet with a time of 4:25.1.
Darian Dailey scored four of East Providence’s points with her fourth-place distance of 16 feet, 8 inches in the long jump. Kaitlyn Bellamy was sixth in the event with a 15’9.5.” Other scorers for the Townies were Sierra Cunningham with a fifth-place run (7.6) in the 55-dash and Deonna DaSilva, sixth in the event with a 7.7.
"I was a little disappointed, thought we would do a little better, was hoping for top 3 finish in the (4x2) relay," said E.P. head coach Bob Duarte. "I know it was a tall order. Thought we would have been top 3 in the dash and Dailey top 3 in the long jump. And I was little disappointed with the total team finish."
Some more results of note from the Large Class competition included the setting of two meet records once held alone by local athletes. The 55-hurdles mark of 8.7 set by former East Providence standout Nichole Haar was broken Wednesday by the winning time of 8.4 by North Kingstown’s Maria Bolibruch.
In addition, the 3,000-meter mark of former LaSalle standout and East Providence resident Jean Christensen was actually matched by a fellow Ram as LaSalle senior Molly Keating ran a 10:16.6.
For the 14 events total, nine meet records were either matched or bettered Wednesday. And one state mark fell. LaSalle’s Dakota Dailey-Harris bettered her won Large Class record in the high jump and also set a new state indoor standard by clearing 5’8.5.”
