— It was neither teams’ best effort for sure, but it was good enough for one of them to win and remain undefeated. Friday, Feb. 10, St. Mary Academy-Bay View once again proved too much for visiting Barrington to handle as the Bengals maintained their perfect mark in Division I-North girls’ hoops outings with a 49-31 victory over the Eagles.

Bay View improved to 15-0 in league games and seems well on its well to finishing the regular season without a loss. Barrington dipped to 9-5 in the I-North standings and fell to third place behind second-place and 10-4 Woonsocket.

“I don’t think we well in the first half, but I think we better, especially defensively, in the second half,” said Bengals’ head coach Doug Haynes. “It was one of those games. When you playing Barrington, they’re going to do some things to throw us off our game. I kind of think we went in here tonight a little overconfident and we didn’t play well. We did enough to win, but we didn’t play well as a team.”

As often happens when Bay View and the Eagles tangle, the action was hectic and sloppy. Both teams began the game turning the ball over more than putting it in the hoop. Whichever side settled down first was likely to take control and that was the Bengals.

Bay View’s Rachel Battista put back her own miss to tie the score at five almost seven minutes in. Mackenzie Smith then sank two free throws as did Johanna Dombrowski as the Bengals took over the lead, an edge their would maintain the rest of the way.

Vandell Andrade’s driving layup gave Bay View a double-digit advantage (17-7) with a little less than four to go in the first half. Andrade would also account for the Bengals’ last hoop, giving the hosts a 19-10 lead at intermission.

Both teams got solid contributions off their benches. Barrington was forced to use its subs in part because of foul trouble. The Eagles’ offensive woes also lingered throughout the opening 16 minutes as they made just four field goals, two on 3-pointers by freshman guard Sarah Middleton.

“We had way too many turnovers. I thought we played well defensively, particularly in the first half,” said Barrington head coach Steve Lenz. “But we had some foul trouble and we had to put a lot of young kids in there. You put that together with a missed layup here and a missed free throw there and against a very good team like Bay View it adds up.”

The Bengals, deeper and with more savvy than their opponents, only added to their lead throughout the rest of the game. Their ad reached 18 on a Luna layup five minutes into the second half. The Eagles scored the next six points on two Maggie O’Hayer free throws, a Caroline Coleman layup and a 15-foot jumper by Maura Kelty.

Bay View, though, answered with a 12-2 run to build what was a night-high 21-point lead (46-21) with about four minutes left. Andrade had five points during the spree and Luna four.

Andrade led all scorers with 15 points. Luna added 12 and Dombrowski nine. The Eagles held Bengals’ leading scorer Battista to just eight. Middleton paced Barrington with 11. Kelty, O’Hayer and Caroline Coleman each added six.

The Eagles are back in action Tuesday night, Feb. 14, in Cumberland at 7 o’clock. Bay View is off until Feb. 17 when the Bengals host the same Cumberland team also at 7 p.m.
