PROVIDENCE — Spurred by three individual victories and placements in 11 of the 14th events contested, the Barrington High School boys’ indoor track and field team captured the 2012 Class B Championship Meet title late Saturday afternoon, Feb. 11, at the Providence Career & Tech Academy Fieldhouse.

The Eagles tallied 94 points for the victory. South Kingstown was second with 75 and Central third with 70. Another of the local entries, Portsmouth, scored 16 points to place eighth and Mt. Hope earned 8 points to finish 10th. The class title was the second in three years for Barrington and 13th in school history.

Dylan Verner-Crist and Tom Barry were winners for Barrington on the track while Calvin Matthes won the high jump.

The highlight of the meet for the Eagles came in Verner-Crist’s victory in the 3,000. The senior clocked a winning time of 9 minutes, 21.7 seconds and led a group of four Barrington runners in the top five spots in the race.

Connor Royley placed second in 9:23.7. Will Casazza was fourth in 9:26.5 and Ryan Saeger was fifth in 9:31.6. For quite some time in the race, the four Eagles set the pace in a separate lead pack. Lincoln’s Matt Olean, though, would eventually break the Barrington log jam, finishing third in 9:24.4.

Barry won the 1,500 in 4:18.6. John Connolly also ran third in the event (4:20.2) with Verner-Crist sixth (4:32.2).

Matthes cleared 5 feet, 6 inches to win the high jump. Max Caro placed third with a height of 5’4.” Also of note from the field events, junior Charlie Ionata placed fourth in the weight throw (59’5.25”) and sixth in the shotput (42’11”).

Nick Tyler had the top result for Portsmouth, running second in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.4 seconds. Six of Mt. Hope’s 10 points came from the third-place finish of its 4x800-meter relay (8:49.5).

Earlier Saturday, East Providence scored 32 points to place sixth in the Class A Championship Meet. Hendricken won its 19th consecutive team title with 124 points. North Kingstown was second with 64 and LaSalle third with 54.5.

Ryan Williams’ victory in the 55-meter dash highlighted the Townies’ effort. The sophomore literally ran side-by-side with Woonsocket’s Jalen Evans, who was in the next lane, edging him at the line for an electronic time of 6.4 seconds. Evans was second at 6.5 followed closely in third by LaSalle junior and Bristol resident Josh Morris with a 6.6.
