DEM officers stand near the deer carcass at Walker Farm on Monday morning. The deer had been struck by a car and was stuck the mud.
BARRINGTON A female deer that had reportedly been struck by a car early Monday morning near the Wampanoag Trail, fled into the marsh at Walker Farm and later became stuck in some mud.
A resident first reported seeing the deer stuck in a muddy marsh just south of the entrance road to Walker Farm at about 7:50 a.m. Officials from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and Barrington Fire Department responded to the scene and located the animal.
Environmental Police Officer Michael Morrissey donned a special cold-weather water-proof suit and helped pull the animal out of the ice-covered mud. Officials then realized the deer had a broken front leg.
“It definitely got hit by a car,” said DEM Sgt. Daniel White. An officer then shot the deer. By 9 a.m., officials had loaded the muddied deer carcass into the back of a DEM pickup truck.
