— Robert Fitzpatrick, a celebrated FBI agent who sacrificed his career to bring down the notorious Boston gangster Whitey Bulger, and Jon Land, an author and Barrington native who has penned more than two dozen fiction novels, will sign copies of their new book “Betrayal” at Barrington Books on Saturday, Jan. 7 from 1 to 4 p.m.

“Betrayal” is the first-person account of Mr. Fitzpatrick, a longtime FBI agent, as he battled to bring down James “Whitey” Bulger, the infamous leader of South Boston’s Winter Hill Gang. (Mr. Bulger was recently captured after a lengthy man-hunt.)

Mr. Fitzpatrick, who now lives in Rhode Island, joined the FBI in 1965 and quickly climbed the ranks inside the bureau. He received commendations and promotions from FBI Director Jay Edgar Hoover for his work in major investigations like the “Mississippi Burning” civil rights murders and the FBI’s Miami ABSCAM corruption sting.

He was eventually promoted and transferred to Boston to “clean up the mess” there.

Mr. Land was introduced to Mr. Fitzpatrick about three years ago and worked with the longtime special agent to build “Betrayal.” It is Mr. Land’s first work of nonfiction.

The early reviews have praised the first-person account.

“A compelling inside account of a web of intrigue and deception that reaches all the way to FBI headquarters in Washington—the ultimate tale or crime and redemption,” wrote Mike Stanton, author of the New York Times bestseller “The Prince of Providence.”
