A Barrington resident clears snow from a driveway during a storm last year. The police chief said some residents and business owners were slow to clear their sidewalks after the Saturday, Jan. 20 snowstorm.
BARRINGTON Two days after snow fell across Barrington, the local police chief was still waiting on some residents and business owners to clear their sidewalks.
“All in all many are complying to the ordinance but some are not and we are out there handing out warnings,” Police Chief John LaCross said on Monday morning, Jan. 23. “They (sidewalks) should have been shoveled by 6 p.m. on Sunday.”
The Town of Barrington has amended the snow removal ordinance. Any person responsible for a building or land bordering any street or public place where there is a sidewalk shall remove the snow and ice by 6 p.m. the day following any snowfall, as well as areas surrounding any fire hydrants.
This also applies to snow or ice that has fallen from any building.
Those who fail to clear the snow or ice will be fined $50 per snowstorm. Anyone with a physical hardship, who is incapable of removing the snow, or who lacks financial means to pay for snow removal, may apply for a hardship waiver from the director of the Department of Public Works.
Chief LaCross said he is asking for cooperation in this matter of safety, especially of those residents and children near local schools and businesses who utilize the sidewalks.
