Barrington teenager charged with breaking into home

Police say girl entered home, party later broke out

— A 16-year-old Barrington girl faces two charges after she allegedly entered an unoccupied home on Elm Lane with some friends on Friday night, Jan. 20.

According to police, the local girl was familiar with the home and knew the occupants were away. She also reportedly knew that a sliding glass door at the home was left unlocked.

At some point during that Friday night, the teenager and a few friends entered the home, but somehow word got out to other teenagers in town. Before long there were dozens of young people at the house, said police, and some of them brought alcoholic drinks.

Police said that the girl who originally broke into the home eventually grew concerned with the gathering and decided to leave.

The next day the girl’s mother contacted the caretaker for the home and told her about the incident; the caretaker, after speaking with the home’s owner, contacted police.

On Sunday, officials charged the Barrington girl with breaking and entering a dwelling without consent and vandalism/malicious injury to property. Some of the teens who were at the house — not the girl who was charged — reportedly damaged a window, a mirror and a chair during the incident. (Police said it was impossible to know if anything had been stolen from the home because the owners had not checked the residence yet.)

According to Barrington Police Chief John LaCross, the girl’s charge of vandalism/malicious injury to property could be dismissed if she is able to tell officers who was responsible for damaging items inside the home. Police are still investigating.
