BARRINGTON A 21 year-old East Providence man who was short on cash decided to pilfer gas cans from Barrington residents’ sheds in order to keep his car fueled, said local police.
On Monday, Jan. 23 Barrington police charged Mario F. Ferreira of 17 Arlington St., East Providence with three counts of larceny under $500 and one count of attempted larceny. Officials said that when Mr. Ferreira ran low on cash and fuel for his car he began rummaging through Barrington residents’ sheds and stealing their gas containers.
The larcenies occurred at about the same time as a string of car break-ins in Barrington. Police said Mr. Ferreira had been the driver for two other men — East Providence’s Christopher Storti and Barrington’s Kevin Russo — who reportedly stole a number of items from unlocked cars in Barrington, East Providence and Seekonk. (Police charged Mr. Storti and Mr. Russo with numerous counts of larceny under $500 for the car break-ins.)
Mr. Ferreira turned himself into Barrington police on Jan. 23 at 1:11 p.m. without incident.
It was not clear why police did not charge Mr. Ferreira in connection with the car break-ins.
